Prayers for Forgiveness
As human beings, we all commit sins. Romans 3:23 says “for all have sinned, and come short of the Glory of God.” Luckily, by the grace of God and the sacrifice of Jesus, we can be forgiven for our sins. This is the heart of Christian faith.
We also commit acts against other human beings that we end up regretting. Have you ever said something mean to someone only to instantly regret it just moments later? Have you been disrespectful to your parents or told a white lie? These are all things that God does not like. They are sins and you must seek forgiveness. One of the best ways to seek forgiveness for yourself and to bear with the transgressions of other people is through prayer.
God loves us no matter what, but He does expect us to be responsible for our mistakes and own up to them. By talking to God through prayer, you let Him know that you accept your mistakes, and accept His mercy, and that you will do better in the future.
If you want to pray for forgiveness, but don’t know how, pray this prayer of King David from the Bible:
O loving and kind God, have mercy. Have pity upon me and take away the awful stain of my transgressions. Oh, wash me, cleanse me from this guilt. Let me be pure again. For I admit my shameful deed – it haunts me day and night. It is against you and you alone I sinned and did this terrible thing. You saw it all, and your sentence against me is just.
Create in me a new, clean heart, O God, filled with clean thoughts and right desires. Don’t toss me aside, banished forever from your presence. Don’t take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me again the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. (Psalm 51:1-12 TLB)
If you are familiar with one of the Christian Creeds, you may wish to try this prayer:
Behold me at Thy feet, O Jesus of Nazareth, behold the most wretched of creatures, who comes into Thy presence humbled and penitent! Have mercy on me, O Lord, according to Thy great mercy! I have sinned and my sins are always before Thee.
Yet my soul belongs to Thee, for Thou hast created it, and redeemed it with Thy Precious Blood. Ah, grant that Thy redeeming work be not in vain! Have pity on me; give me tears of true repentance; pardon me for I am Thy child; pardon me as Thou didst pardon the penitent thief; look upon me from Thy throne in heaven and give me Thy blessing.
I believe in God… (as the rest of the Creed)
As an additional act of penitence and to bring your prayer closer to god, you can also send your prayers to The Church of the Holy Sepulcher, just like thousands of christens do every year.
The church of the holy sepulcher is the place where our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was crucified, buried and resurrected. HolyLandPrayer.com is an organization that lives footsteps from the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.
