Catholic Prayers for Anxiety

The Catholic tradition has never treated an anxious mind as a scandal. It has treated it as something the saints knew from the inside, and it has left behind prayers, devotions and plain advice for people whose thoughts will not settle. This page gathers them: the ancient prayers you may already half-remember, the saints who are asked for help with fear and mental distress, and prayers written for the particular hours when anxiety is worst.

A word of care: prayer belongs in the middle of anxiety, not instead of the help God gives through other people. If anxiety is making it hard to sleep, eat, work, or be with the people you love, please speak to your doctor or a counsellor as well as praying. The Church has always held that grace works through medicine as well as sacrament. Seeking treatment is not a lack of faith.

Anxious Right Now The Memorare Traditional Prayers Saints to Ask St. Dymphna Praying the Rosary A Novena for Anxiety Morning and Night Questions

If You Are Anxious Right Now

Short, ancient, and enough. Say one of these until your breathing changes.

  • Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I give you my heart and my soul.
  • Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me.
  • My Jesus, mercy.
  • Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for me now.
  • Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You.

These are aspirations: single-breath prayers the Church has used for centuries precisely because they can be prayed when nothing longer is possible.

The Memorare

If you learn only one prayer for anxious moments, learn this one. It is roughly five hundred years old, it takes thirty seconds, and it is built on a single argument: no one who asked was ever turned away.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Pray it slowly. The line to rest on is “never was it known”. Anxiety’s central claim is that you will be the exception, and this prayer says plainly that you are not.

Traditional Catholic Prayers for a Troubled Mind

The Prayer of St. Teresa of Ávila

Let nothing disturb you.
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing away.
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things.
Whoever has God lacks nothing.
God alone suffices.

Found written in her breviary after her death. Six lines, and the last one does most of the work.

The Counsel of St. Francis de Sales

Do not look forward to what may happen tomorrow. The same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of you tomorrow and every day. Either He will shield you from suffering, or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace then, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.

St. Francis de Sales wrote this to a woman he was directing who was exhausted by anticipation. It is the most practically useful sentence in the tradition for anxiety about the future.

The Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesus, hear me.
Within Thy wounds hide me.
Suffer me not to be separated from Thee.
From the malignant enemy defend me.
In the hour of my death call me,
And bid me come unto Thee,
That with Thy saints I may praise Thee
Forever and ever. Amen.

“Within Thy wounds hide me” is a good line to carry into a frightening day.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

A note of balance: anxiety is usually a medical and human condition rather than a spiritual attack, and treating it purely as warfare can add guilt to fear. Pray this for protection and courage, not as a diagnosis.

Saints to Ask for Help With Anxiety

Asking a saint to pray for you is not going around God. It is asking someone who has arrived to pray for someone still walking, the same thing you do when you ask a friend.

St. Dymphna: anxiety, nervous disorders and mental distress

The traditional patroness of those who suffer in mind. Her shrine has been a place of pilgrimage for the mentally ill since the Middle Ages, at a time when almost nowhere else would receive them.

St. Teresa of Ávila: the restless and the interior struggler

She wrote frankly about a mind she could not govern during prayer, and refused to let that be a verdict on her soul.

St. Francis de Sales: the anxious and the scrupulous

Gentle with people who were hard on themselves. His letters are still the best Catholic counsel on worry.

St. Jude: desperate cases and lost hope

For anxiety that has gone on so long you no longer expect it to change.

St. Joseph: those who lie awake

He is asked for a happy death and a quiet home. He is also, quietly, a good patron for the sleepless, having been given his hardest instructions in the middle of the night.

A Prayer to St. Dymphna for Anxiety

Good St. Dymphna,
You are the friend of those whose minds will not rest.
I come to you carrying an anxiety I cannot reason away and cannot always explain.
Ask the Lord for what I need: a quiet mind, an ordinary night’s sleep, and the courage to accept the help He sends through doctors, medicine and honest friends.
Pray that I would stop measuring my faith by how calm I feel.
And in the hours when I am most afraid, obtain for me the grace simply to endure them, knowing that they end.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

A Short Invocation

St. Dymphna, patroness of those who suffer in mind, pray for me. Amen.

Praying the Rosary When You Are Anxious

The Rosary is unusually well suited to an anxious mind, because it gives the mind something repetitive to hold while the heart does something else. You are not required to concentrate perfectly. The beads carry you when attention fails.

A practical way to use it

If a full Rosary feels like one more obligation, pray a single decade. Choose the Sorrowful Mysteries and stay with the Agony in the Garden, the mystery in which Christ himself is in distress, sweating and asking for the cup to pass. It is the least lonely place in the whole devotion for someone who is afraid.

An Offering Before the Decade

Blessed Mother, I offer this decade for my own troubled mind, and for everyone praying tonight who is afraid and cannot say why. Take our fear into your hands, and give us your Son’s peace. Amen.

A Novena Prayer for Anxiety

A novena is nine days of praying the same intention, and it has a particular value in anxiety: it commits you to returning tomorrow, on a day when you may feel nothing at all. Pray this once a day for nine days.

Lord Jesus Christ,
In the garden You were in anguish, and You did not hide it. You asked for the cup to pass and You were not rebuked for asking.
So I bring You mine.
For nine days I will bring You this same fear, whether or not it has moved, whether or not I feel anything when I pray.
Give me relief if it is Your will. Give me endurance if it is not. Give me, either way, the certainty that I am not praying into an empty room.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for me.
St. Dymphna, pray for me.
All you saints who were ever afraid, pray for me.
Amen.

Morning and Night

A Morning Offering for an Anxious Day

O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You this day: my prayers, works, joys and sufferings. I offer You especially the anxiety I am waking with. Use it. Do not let it be wasted. And carry me through the hours I am already dreading. Amen.

An Examination of Conscience Without Scruples

Lord, before I look back over this day, remind me who is looking with me. You are not gathering evidence. Show me what I did wrong so that I can be forgiven, and stop me from confessing things that were never sins: being tired, being afraid, being human. Amen.

Scrupulosity and anxiety often travel together. If examining your conscience regularly leaves you more distressed rather than more free, speak to a priest about it plainly. That is precisely what confessors are for.

A Night Prayer

Into Your hands, Lord, I commend this day, finished or unfinished.
Watch over this house. Watch over the people I have been afraid for.
Let me sleep, and let the morning be new.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, be with me tonight. Amen.

Questions People Ask

Which saint do you pray to for anxiety?

St. Dymphna is the traditional patroness of anxiety, nervous conditions and mental distress. St. Francis de Sales is asked for help with worry and a scrupulous conscience, St. Teresa of Ávila for a restless mind in prayer, and St. Jude when a situation feels hopeless.

Is there a Catholic prayer to stop worrying?

The most direct is the counsel of St. Francis de Sales above: that the Father who cares for you today will care for you tomorrow, and will either shield you from the suffering or give you strength to bear it. The Memorare is the shortest prayer to reach for in the moment itself.

Is anxiety a sin in the Catholic Church?

No. The Church distinguishes between a feeling, which is not sinful in itself, and a deliberate choice. Anxiety is a condition of a limited creature, and often of a body under strain. Christ’s own agony in Gethsemane makes it impossible to treat distress as a moral failure. What is worth confessing is not the fear but anything it drives you to: despair of God’s mercy, or unkindness to the people around you.

Can I offer up my anxiety?

Yes, and many people find it changes the character of the suffering, not by making it lighter, but by making it mean something. Offer it for someone specific. Be careful of one trap: offering it up is not a reason to avoid treatment. You can offer up a suffering and still take the medicine that eases it.

Does the Rosary help with anxiety?

Many people find it does, for a straightforward reason: the repetition occupies the restless part of the mind and lets the rest of you settle. Start with one decade rather than the full Rosary, and do not judge the prayer by how well you concentrated.
