Some mornings you wake up rested, some rushed, and some already dreading what is ahead. Here is what to pray on each of them, and how to turn a morning prayer into a habit that lasts.
A morning prayer does not need to be long. What matters is that it comes first, before the phone, the news and the list. Below are prayers for the mornings people actually have: waking with dread, a rushed school or work morning, praying with children, and starting again after a hard yesterday. There is also the traditional Morning Offering, and what three well-known morning verses really mean. For a prayer for each day of the week, see Prayer for Today; for the end of the day, see Evening Prayers.
How this page is labeled: prayers marked Traditional come from Scripture or long Christian use. All other prayers were written by the Holy Land Prayer team. Scripture quotations are from the NIV.
Short Morning Prayers
- This is the day the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it. Traditional, from Psalm 118:24.
- Lord, here I am. Use me today.
- Jesus, go ahead of me into this day.
- Thank You for new mercies this morning.
- Holy Spirit, guide my words and my choices today.
A Morning Prayer When You Wake Up With Dread
Some mornings the heaviness is there before you open your eyes: a hard meeting, a diagnosis, a conflict at home, or nothing you can name.
A Prayer for a Rushed School or Work Morning
For the mornings when there are lunches to pack, a bus to catch and no quiet minute in sight. Say it in the shower, in the car or on the walk to the door.
A Morning Prayer to Pray With Children
Short enough for small children to repeat after you, line by line, at breakfast or at the door.
Thank You for my family and my bed.
Help me to be kind today,
to listen and to learn.
Keep me safe, and keep my friends safe too.
Amen.
A Prayer to Start Again After a Hard Yesterday
Yesterday went badly. Maybe you lost your temper, failed at something, or had news that knocked you flat. This prayer is for beginning again.
The Morning Offering
Traditional. A Catholic prayer offering the whole day to God, prayed daily by members of the Apostleship of Prayer, now the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network.
Three Morning Verses and What They Mean
In this psalm, attributed to David, the writer is surrounded by people who are lying about him (Psalm 5:9). The morning is when he brings his case to God and then waits. It is less a cheerful routine than a decision to put the day’s troubles in God’s hands first.
These famous lines were written in the ruins of Jerusalem after its destruction in 587 BC, in a book that is mostly grief. The hope in them is not the hope of a good day; it is the hope of someone who has lost almost everything and still finds God faithful. That makes them a good morning prayer on the hardest days.
This came the morning after a long night in Capernaum, when the whole town had gathered at the door with their sick. Jesus, busier than anyone, still went to pray first. The lesson is not that you must wake before dawn, but that prayer is worth protecting at the start of a demanding day.
How to Make Morning Prayer a Habit
- Pray before your phone. Keep it in another room, or decide that the first screen you look at waits until after you have prayed.
- Attach it to something you already do. The kettle, brushing your teeth, the first coffee, the walk to the car.
- Keep it short enough to keep. One minute every day beats twenty minutes once a week.
- Use the same words for a while. Learning one morning prayer by heart means you can pray it on the days you have nothing else.
- Include one person by name. Pray for someone else every morning; it turns the prayer outward.
Questions People Ask
What is a good morning prayer?
One you will actually pray. A simple example: “Good morning, Lord. Thank You for this new day. I give it to You. Walk with me through every hour. Amen.” The Catholic Morning Offering is a traditional prayer that offers the whole day to God.
What does the Bible say about praying in the morning?
Psalm 5:3 describes bringing requests to God in the morning, Lamentations 3:22 to 23 says God’s mercies are new every morning, and Mark 1:35 shows Jesus rising early to pray.
How long should a morning prayer be?
As long as you can keep up. For most people, one to five minutes every day is more sustaining than a long prayer they cannot maintain.
What is the difference between morning prayer and a prayer for today?
This page is about the morning practice itself: how and what to pray as the day begins. Prayer for Today gives a prayer for each day of the week that you can pray at any time.
Send Your Prayer to Jerusalem
If you would like a prayer carried to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where the first Easter morning began, write it in the form at the top of this page. We print it, place it in one of the chapels and light a candle for you, and a priest prays it in English.
