Prayer for a Child With Anxiety
There is a particular helplessness in watching your child be afraid. You cannot reason them out of it (you have tried), and the reassurance that works on Tuesday does nothing on Wednesday. This page is for the parent standing outside a locked bathroom door before school, or sitting on the end of a bed at eleven at night, praying for a child whose fear has no obvious cause and will not be argued with.
The prayers below are grouped by the moment you are in. There are also short prayers written in a child’s own words, further down, that you can teach them to say for themselves.
A word of care: prayer belongs alongside help, not instead of it. If your child’s anxiety is keeping them from school, from sleep, from eating, or from friendships, please talk to your doctor, or to the school. Childhood anxiety responds well to treatment, and getting that help early is one of the kindest things a parent can do. Asking for it is not a failure of faith or of parenting.

If You Need to Pray Right Now
You are probably reading this in a hallway or a car. These are short enough for that.
- Lord Jesus, be with my child in this. Go where I cannot.
- Father, quiet their body. Let the fear pass.
- God, hold them. And hold me while I hold them.
- Jesus, You love them more than I do. Prove it now.
A Prayer for a Child With Anxiety
Prayer for an Anxious Child
Heavenly Father,
You made this child. You know the shape of their mind better than I ever will: every wire in it, every place it runs too fast.
They are afraid, and I cannot reach the part of them that is afraid. I have said everything true and it has not been enough.
So I bring them to You. Meet them inside the fear. Be the steady thing when nothing feels steady. Give them one ordinary day, and then another.
Send them the right help: a doctor who listens properly, a teacher who is patient, one friend who makes them feel normal.
And Lord, protect them from believing that this is who they are. Let them grow up knowing they were anxious and loved, not anxious and a problem.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
A Prayer for a Child Who Worries About Everything
Lord, my child carries the whole world on shoulders that are far too small for it. They worry about things no child should have to think about. Take some of it off them. Let them be young for a while longer. Teach them, slowly, that they are not responsible for holding everything together, because You are. Amen.
A Prayer for a Child Having a Panic Attack
Jesus, be here. Their body is frightened and their mind cannot help it. Slow their breathing. Let them feel my hand and know it is safe. Let this pass quickly, and let them not be ashamed of it afterwards. Amen.
Say it out loud, quietly, while you sit with them. Hearing a calm voice does more than the words do.
Prayers for School Anxiety and Separation
A Prayer Before the School Run
Father,
This morning is hard again. There were tears before breakfast and there will probably be tears at the gate.
Go into that building ahead of my child. Put someone kind next to them. Let the day be smaller than they fear.
Give me patience when I am running late and out of gentleness. Do not let me make them feel that their fear is an inconvenience.
Bring them home to me safe, and let them have one good thing to tell me.
Amen.
A Prayer for a Child Who Will Not Go to School
Lord, this has stopped being a phase and I am out of my depth. I do not know whether to push or to hold back, and I am afraid of getting it wrong in a way that lasts. Give me wisdom, and give me people to ask. Give my child courage in the exact size they can manage today, not the whole term, just today. Amen.
A Prayer for Separation Anxiety
God, my child does not want me to leave, and part of me does not want to. Be with them in the gap. Let the minutes be short. Let them discover, again and again, that I come back, and that You never left at all. Amen.
A Prayer Before an Exam or a Test
Lord, my child has worked, and now they are frightened of a piece of paper. Steady their hands. Bring back what they know. And whatever the mark is, let them walk out knowing that it measures an hour, not a person. Amen.
More on this: prayers for studies and exams.
Prayers for Bedtime and the Dark
A Prayer Over a Sleeping Child
Lord Jesus, they are finally asleep. Guard this room. Let the night be unbroken. Take the worry out of their dreams and give it to me, or better, take it from us both. Amen.
A Prayer for a Child Who Is Afraid at Night
Father,
The dark makes everything bigger and my child knows it.
Fill this room with Your presence so completely that there is no space left for fear.
Send Your angels to keep watch at the door and the window and the end of the bed.
Let sleep come gently, and let morning come soon.
Amen.
A Prayer for a Child Who Keeps Getting Out of Bed
God, I am tired and I am close to snapping, and they are not doing this on purpose. Give me one more measure of patience than I have. Let my voice stay soft. Settle them, and settle me. Amen.
Prayers for an Anxious Teenager
A Prayer for a Teenager Who Will Not Talk
Lord,
The door is shut and I do not know what is behind it any more.
I am not asking You to make them tell me everything. I am asking You to make sure someone knows: a friend, a teacher, a counsellor, You.
Keep them safe in the places I cannot see. Guard what they read at midnight. Guard who they compare themselves to.
And when they are ready to speak, make me the kind of parent who listens without immediately trying to fix it.
Amen.
A Prayer for a Teenager Under Pressure
Father, they are being measured constantly (grades, bodies, followers, futures), and they have started measuring themselves the same way. Break the ruler. Let them hear one true thing about who they are that has nothing to do with performance. Amen.
A Prayer for a Teenager Struggling With Friendships
Lord, my child is lonely and pretending not to be. Send them one real friend. Not a crowd, just one person who is glad they exist. And in the meantime, let them know they are not strange for finding this hard. Amen.
Prayers a Child Can Say
These are written to be short enough to remember and simple enough to mean. Teach one, and let them keep it. A prayer they can say without you is worth more than a prayer they need you for.
- Jesus, I am scared. Please stay with me.
- God, You are bigger than this. Help me be brave.
- Lord, hold my hand today.
- Jesus, my tummy hurts and my head is busy. Make it quiet.
- God, thank You that You are here even when I cannot see You.
A Bedtime Prayer for a Child to Say
Dear God,
Thank You for today, even the hard parts.
Please stay in my room tonight.
Keep my family safe, and help me not be scared.
I know You are watching me sleep.
Amen.
A Morning Prayer for a Child to Say
Good morning, God.
Please help me today, especially the part I am worried about.
Help me be kind, and help me be brave.
Thank You that You are coming with me.
Amen.
Prayers for You, the Parent
Your own anxiety is real, and it usually goes unnamed because your child’s comes first. It should be prayed for too.
A Prayer for a Frightened Parent
Father,
I am frightened for my child and I am frightened of what my fear is doing to them.
I lie awake building futures I cannot survive. I read their faces for signs. I am exhausted.
You love them more than I do. That sentence is difficult for me to believe and I want to believe it.
Carry the part of this that is not mine to carry. Let me be the calm in their day rather than another weather system.
And forgive me for the times I have got it wrong. Cover what I have got wrong.
Amen.
A Prayer When You Feel You Are Failing Them
Lord, I lost my temper again and I saw their face. I am not the parent I meant to be. Forgive me, heal what I have bruised, and give me tomorrow to try again. Do not let my worst moments be the ones they remember. Amen.
A Prayer for Wisdom About What to Do Next
God, I do not know whether this is something they will grow out of or something that needs help now. Give me clear eyes. Send me someone who knows more than I do, and give me the humility to take their advice. Amen.
Praying With an Anxious Child
Keep it short
A frightened child cannot hold a long prayer. Three sentences is a prayer.
Name the actual fear
Pray about the spelling test, the sleepover, the sound in the hallway. Vague prayers about peace do not land. Children take God more seriously when He is told the truth.
Let them pray badly
Do not correct their theology or their grammar. A child who is corrected while praying learns that prayer is a performance.
Do not promise outcomes
Avoid “if we pray, it will be fine.” Pray for God to be with them in it. That promise is one you can keep, and it survives a bad day.
Touch helps
A hand on the back while you pray does more for a small nervous system than any wording will.
Questions Parents Ask
What can I pray over my anxious child?
Pray something specific and short, out loud, where they can hear it: that God would be with them in the thing they are dreading, that their body would be calm, and that they would have one good moment today. The prayer for an anxious child above is written to be prayed aloud at a bedside.
What Bible verse is good for an anxious child?
Joshua 1:9 works well because it is a command with a reason attached: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Younger children often hold on to Psalm 56:3, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you”, because it is short enough to say by themselves.
Should I tell my child their anxiety is a spiritual attack?
It is usually wiser not to. A child told that their fear is a spiritual battle can conclude that they are losing one, which adds shame to an already frightening experience. Speak about anxiety the way you would speak about asthma: real, common, treatable, and not their fault.
How do I pray when I am the anxious one?
Pray honestly, and where possible not in front of them. Children absorb a parent’s fear quickly. Bring your own anxiety to God, to your spouse, or to a friend, so that what your child sees from you is steadiness, not because you are pretending, but because you have somewhere else to put it. The prayers for parents above are for exactly this.
Can prayer replace treatment for a child with anxiety?
No. Childhood anxiety responds very well to treatment, and the earlier it is addressed the better the outcome tends to be. Pray, and also see your doctor. These have never been alternatives.
