Prayer for a Son or Daughter With Addiction

This page is for the parent. For the one who checks whether the car is on the drive before going to bed, who has learned the sound of a particular key in a particular door, who answers the phone at two in the morning with their heart already going.

Nothing here will tell you it is your fault, because it is not. Nothing here will promise you an outcome, because no honest page can. What it can give you is words for the specific nights, and the company of a woman who prayed for a son like this for seventeen years before anything changed.

A word of care: you need support of your own, not only for them. Al‑Anon exists precisely for families in this, it is free, and going is not disloyalty. It is how people survive loving someone in addiction. In the United States, SAMHSA’s National Helpline can point you to both family and treatment services: 1-800-662-HELP (4357); in crisis, call or text 988. Elsewhere, your own doctor is a good first call. Getting help for yourself is not giving up on your child.

If You Need to Pray Right Now

You are probably not in a position to read a page. These are for the car, the hallway, the hospital corridor.

  • Lord, keep them alive tonight. That is all I am asking for tonight.
  • Jesus, go where I cannot go.
  • Father, You love them more than I do. Hold them.
  • God, let the phone ring and let it be them.
  • Lord, put someone kind in front of them right now.
  • Jesus, I cannot carry this. I am putting it down.

A Prayer for a Son With Addiction

Prayer for My Son

Heavenly Father,
You know the boy he was. So do I, and some days that is the hardest part. I keep looking for him in the face of the man in front of me.
He is in something that has hold of him, and I cannot pull him out of it. I have tried. I have shouted and pleaded and paid and said nothing, and none of it was the key.
So I bring him to You.
Keep him alive. That first, before anything else. Keep him alive long enough to want this.
Send him someone he will actually listen to, since it is not me. A doctor, a stranger, an old friend, another man who has been where he is.
And when the moment comes that he reaches for help, let there be a door open and let him walk through it.
I am not asking You to make him what I wanted. I am asking You to give him back to himself.
Through Jesus Christ, Amen.

A Prayer for a Son Who Will Not Speak to You

Lord, he has cut me off and I do not know if it is anger or shame. Guard him in the silence. Keep the door open on my side without letting me batter at his. Let him remember, wherever he is tonight, that he has somewhere to come back to. Amen.

A Prayer for a Son in Danger

God, he is somewhere I cannot picture, with people I do not know, and my mind has already shown me the worst of it. Put Your hand between him and harm. Send Your angels to the places I am afraid of. Bring him home. Amen.

A Prayer for a Daughter With Addiction

Prayer for My Daughter

Father,
My daughter is not well and the world is not gentle with women who are not well.
Protect her. From the substance, and from the people who will use the state she is in.
Give her back her sense of her own worth, the thing this has stripped out of her first and fastest.
Let her be somewhere warm tonight. Let someone treat her decently.
And when she is ready, put the help within her reach and give her the courage to take it.
She is Yours before she is mine. Hold her.
Amen.

A Prayer for a Daughter Who Is a Mother

Lord, there are children in this too, and they did not choose any of it. Protect them. Give me wisdom about what I can do for them and what is not mine to decide. Heal this family down the generations, so it stops here. Amen.

Prayers for the Long Nights

A Prayer at Two in the Morning

Lord,
I am awake again and there is nothing to be done at this hour.
You do not sleep. You are with them right now, in whatever room they are in.
Take the watch from me. I cannot keep it and You never asked me to.
Let me sleep. Let me be some use tomorrow.
Amen.

A Prayer While Waiting for a Call

God, the phone has not rung and I do not know if that is good news or the other thing. Hold me in the not-knowing. Whatever the news is, be there before it. Amen.

A Prayer When You Have Heard the Worst

Lord, I have just been told and I cannot take it in. Stay very close. Give me the next ten minutes. Give me someone to sit with me. Amen.

A Prayer to St. Monica

St. Monica prayed for her son Augustine for seventeen years while he lived a life that broke her heart. He became one of the great minds of the Church. She is the patron saint of exactly this: long prayer that looks, for years, like nothing.

St. Monica,
You prayed for your son for seventeen years and were not answered for sixteen of them.
You wept over him, and were told that the child of those tears could not be lost.
Ask the Lord for my child now.
Teach me to pray the way you did, without demanding proof, without giving up, without letting the years turn me hard.
And ask for something for me as well: rest, and the wisdom to know where my love ends and their choices begin.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

A Short Invocation

St. Monica, mother of a wayward son, pray for my child and for me. Amen.

Love, Boundaries and Letting Go

This is the hardest part and it is rarely prayed about, so it goes unexamined. Families in addiction slowly take on a job that was never theirs, managing another person’s survival, and the exhaustion of it gets mistaken for love. It is worth saying plainly, in devotional language: when you cannot rest until they are safe, you have started to stand where God stands. Stepping back from that is not abandoning them. It is putting Him back in the position you have been trying to hold.

A Prayer to Stop Trying to Be Their God

Father,
I have been running their life in my head all day, every day, for years.
I have tried to control what happens to them because I could not bear the alternative, and I have worn myself down to nothing doing it.
That is Your job and I have been doing it badly.
Take it back. Let me love them without managing them.
Show me the difference between helping and enabling, because I have genuinely lost track of it.
Amen.

A Prayer Before Saying No

Lord, they are going to ask me for something and I am going to say no, and it is going to feel like cruelty. Steady my voice. Let the no be loving and let it hold. Do not let me confuse being needed with being useful. Amen.

A Prayer for the Guilt Afterwards

God, I said no and now I am sick about it. Take the guilt that is not mine. Leave me the part that is honest, and let the rest go. Amen.

When They Relapse

A Prayer After a Relapse

Lord,
We were doing so well. I had started to let myself hope, and I know better than to do that, and I did it anyway.
Do not let me become cold to protect myself.
Do not let them read my disappointment as a verdict. They already have enough shame to be going on with, and shame is what sends them back out.
Give us both another beginning. Not from the top. From here.
Amen.

A Prayer When Hope Is Hard

Father, I have hoped so many times that hoping has started to feel foolish. Give me a stubborn kind of hope, not the sort that needs evidence, the sort that just keeps praying. Amen.

Going Into Treatment

A Prayer the Day They Go In

Lord,
Today they go, and I am relieved and terrified in the same breath.
Go in ahead of them. Give them staff who are patient and honest. Give them one person in there who makes it bearable.
Take their pride at the door. Let them be teachable.
And while they are safe for a few weeks, help me sleep, and help me start putting myself back together.
Amen.

A Prayer While They Are Away

God, the house is quiet in a way I do not know what to do with. Be in the quiet. Do the work in them that I could never do. Amen.

A Prayer for When They Come Home

Lord, they are coming back and I do not know how to be around them. Take the eggshells out of this house. Let us be honest with each other, and let me not spend every conversation checking their eyes. Amen.

Prayers for You

Your own life has been running in the background of this for years. It should be prayed for too.

A Prayer for an Exhausted Parent

Father,
I am so tired. Not sleepy, but tired underneath everything.
I have not thought about my own life in a long time. I do not know what I would do with a free evening.
Carry the part of this that is not mine to carry.
Give me one thing this week that is only for me, and take away the guilt I will feel about it.
And keep some tenderness in me. I can feel it hardening and I do not want to become someone who cannot be moved.
Amen.

A Prayer for the Anger

Lord, I am angry with them and I have nowhere to put it. Take it. Not by making me pretend, but by letting me say it here, honestly, so I do not say it to them in a way I cannot take back. Amen.

A Prayer for the Guilt

God, I go over the years looking for the moment I caused this. Stop me. Show me what was actually mine, let me be forgiven for that, and take the rest, because it was never mine to answer for. Amen.

A Prayer for Your Other Children

Father, there are my other children, and they have grown up around this and asked for very little. Forgive me for what I did not have left to give them. Let them know they were never second. Heal what this cost them. Amen.

A Prayer for Your Marriage Through This

Lord,
We do not agree about how to handle it. One of us wants to help and one of us wants to hold the line, and we have said hard things to each other in the middle of the night.
Keep us on the same side. This is hard enough without losing each other in it.
Give us one conversation this week that is not about our child.
Amen.

Bible Verses for a Parent Praying

1 Peter 5:7: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

Isaiah 49:15: “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!”

Luke 15:20: “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.”

Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Lamentations 3:22–23: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning.”

Romans 8:38–39: “Neither death nor life … nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Luke 15 is the one to sit with. The father in that parable does not go and fetch his son, and he does not stop watching the road either. That is the position you are being asked to hold, and it is as hard as it sounds.

Questions Parents Ask

What can I pray for my addicted son or daughter?

Pray for specific, survivable things rather than for a breakthrough: that they are alive tomorrow, that someone kind crosses their path today, that when they reach for help a door is open. Vague prayers for deliverance leave you with nothing to notice when it is answered. The prayers above are written that way deliberately.

Is my child’s addiction my fault?

No. Addiction has genetic, medical and circumstantial roots, and no parent causes it. Almost every parent in this situation combs back through the years looking for the moment they did it, and it is worth naming that as the grief it is rather than the investigation it pretends to be. If there are things you would do differently, bring those to God, be forgiven, and put them down.

Should I keep helping them financially?

That is a decision no page can make for you, and it usually needs someone who knows your situation, which is one of the reasons Al‑Anon and family counselling exist. What can be said generally is that the distinction that matters is not between helping and refusing, but between what supports recovery and what supports the addiction. Those are often opposite things, and they are very hard to tell apart from inside the family.

How long should I keep praying if nothing changes?

St. Monica prayed for seventeen years. That is not offered as a promise about your child. It is offered because it is honest about the timescale, and because the tradition does not treat unanswered prayer as failed prayer. Keep praying. Also keep living, which is the harder instruction.

What is Al-Anon and should I go?

Al‑Anon is a free support fellowship for the families and friends of people with alcohol problems, with related groups for families affected by drugs. Going does not mean you have given up on your child, and it is not a betrayal of them. It is where people learn the difference between helping and enabling from others who have already made every mistake you are about to make.

Which saint do I pray to for a child with addiction?

St. Monica, who prayed for her son Augustine for seventeen years, is the patron of parents in exactly this position. Venerable Matt Talbot is asked for the person in addiction themselves, and St. Jude when a situation feels beyond hope. There are prayers to all three on our Catholic prayers for addiction page.
