What Success Means When You Pray for It

There is a version of praying for success that is really just asking God to agree with a plan already made. It tends to end badly, not because God is offended by ambition, but because it leaves you with nothing to pray when the plan does not work.

The older Christian instinct is different. It treats success as something to be received rather than extracted, and it keeps two questions alive at the same time: let this go well, and let me be someone worth trusting with it if it does. Scripture is unusually blunt about the second one. Jesus asks what it profits a person to gain the whole world and lose their soul. Proverbs says to commit your work to the Lord and your plans will be established, which is a promise about direction rather than a guarantee of outcome.

When the Answer Is No

Almost nothing written about praying for success deals with this, which is odd, because it is the part everybody eventually needs.

You can pray sincerely, prepare properly and do everything right, and still not get it. That is not evidence that you prayed badly, that your faith was too small, or that God was punishing you. Prayer is a relationship, not a mechanism, and a relationship in which the answer is always yes is not a relationship at all.

What is worth saying plainly is that a no is not always a no. Sometimes it is a delay, and the timing turns out to matter. Sometimes it is a redirection you could not have chosen for yourself. Sometimes it is a door closing on something that would have cost you more than you could see. And sometimes it is simply painful, with no lesson attached, and the honest thing is to grieve it rather than to hunt for a silver lining that is not there yet.

I prayed and I worked and I did not get it, and right now I am more angry than faithful.

Success in the Catholic Tradition

The Catholic tradition has an unusually clear-eyed line on this, and it is worth knowing because it does not appear anywhere else in the way people usually talk about success.

The traditional prayer to St. Joseph for success in work asks for the grace to work conscientiously, to develop the gifts God gave rather than bury them, and then adds a phrase most modern prayers would never include: it asks to be kept from vain complacency in success, which it calls fatal to the work of God. That is a prayer written by people who had watched success ruin someone.

What is a good prayer for success?

Is it wrong to pray for success?

That claim is not in the tradition and it is cruel to anyone it fails. You can pray boldly for success without accepting it.

Should I pray instead of preparing?

No. The two were never alternatives. Do the revision, rehearse the answers, check the numbers, and pray. A prayer for success that replaces the work is a request for a miracle to cover for something you could have done yourself, and it usually leaves you less able rather than more.
