Write Your Prayer

Your prayer is private and treated with reverence.

You can write your prayer in your own language. It is printed exactly as you write it and placed in the Church, and the priest prays for your intention in English.

Baptism is the sacrament by which a person is washed in water in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and joined to Christ and His Church. Below are prayers for a baby’s baptism, a parent’s and a godparent’s prayer, a prayer for an adult preparing for baptism, a blessing for a baptism anniversary, and what Scripture says about baptism.

A Prayer for a Baby’s Baptism

Heavenly Father, thank You for (name). Today this child is baptised in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and becomes part of Your family. Keep them safe as they grow, and let them always know they belong to You. Amen.
  • Lord, bless this child on the day of their baptism.
  • Jesus, let the light of this baptism candle shine in them all their life.
  • Holy Spirit, make this child Your home.

A Parents’ Prayer on the Day of Baptism

Lord, today we promise to raise our child in the faith. We cannot do it on our own. Give us patience, wisdom and a living faith of our own, so that our child sees You in our home. Help us to pray with them, teach them about Jesus and show them how to love. Amen.

A Godparent’s Prayer

Lord, I have been asked to stand beside (name) as a godparent. Help me to take this seriously. Let me pray for this child every day, set a good example, remember their baptism day, and be someone they can turn to as they grow in faith. Amen.

A Prayer for an Adult Preparing for Baptism

Lord Jesus, You have called me and I am answering. As I prepare to be baptised, prepare my heart. Take away my sins, give me Your Holy Spirit, and make me a new person. Help me to keep the promises I will make, and give me brothers and sisters in faith to walk with me. Amen.

A Blessing for a Baptism Anniversary

Many families light the baptism candle each year on the anniversary of a child’s baptism and pray together. It is a simple way to help a child remember that they belong to God.

Lord, on this day (name) was baptised and became Your child. Thank You for Your faithfulness since then. Renew in them the grace of their baptism, keep them walking in Your light, and let them never forget whose they are. Amen.

What the Bible Says About Baptism

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19 (NIV)

“We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” Romans 6:4 (NIV)

“For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” Galatians 3:27 (NIV)

Jesus Himself was baptised by John in the Jordan River, and the heavens opened and a voice said, “This is my Son, whom I love.” Christians have baptised new believers and their children ever since.

A Baptism Prayer from Jerusalem

Saint Paul says that in baptism we are buried with Christ and raised with Him (Romans 6:4), and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre stands over the place Christians remember as His tomb. If you would like a prayer for a baptism, a godchild or your own baptismal promises carried there, write it in the form at the top of this page. It is printed and placed in one of the chapels, a priest prays it in English, and a candle is lit on your behalf; photographs of both come to you by email. See how it works.
