Caring for someone who is seriously ill is a job nobody applied for and most people do badly at first, because there is no training and no end date. These are prayers for the parts of it that are hard to say out loud: the exhaustion, the guilt, the resentment that arrives uninvited, and the grief that starts long before anyone dies. There is also a prayer for the days you are too tired to pray at all.

A Prayer for Today
When: First thing, before the day starts making demands. Short enough to say while the kettle boils.
When You Are Exhausted
Father, I am so tired that I have stopped noticing I am tired. I keep going because stopping is not on offer. Carry the part of this I cannot carry. Send me sleep, and send me one person who asks how I am and waits for the real answer. Amen.
Lord, I have nothing left and there are still hours to go. Meet me in the next hour. Just the next one. Amen.
Worth saying plainly: accepting help is not a failure of love, and respite is not abandonment. Caregivers who never hand over do not last, and the person you are caring for does not benefit from your collapse. If someone offers, say yes and be specific about what would help.
When You Feel Guilty
Nearly every caregiver carries some version of this: that you are not doing enough, or not doing it well, or that you were short with them yesterday and they are ill and you are not.
Lord, I was impatient with someone who did not deserve it, and I cannot take it back because there is no good moment to raise it. Forgive me. Let them have felt it less than I did. Give me a gentler tone tomorrow, and keep me from doing penance instead of just being present. Amen.
God, I keep a list of everything I have not managed, and I read it at night. Take it. Show me what today actually held rather than what it lacked. Amen.
When You Resent It
This is the one caregivers do not say to anyone, and it is close to universal. You can love someone completely and still resent what their illness has taken from your life. Both are true at once. Naming it is not disloyalty.
Father, I resent this. I resent what it has cost and what it is still costing, and I feel monstrous for it. You already know, so I am saying it here rather than letting it leak out sideways at them. Do not let it curdle. Let me love them today in spite of it, which may be the more honest kind of love anyway. Amen.
If the resentment has become constant, that is usually a sign the load is genuinely too large rather than a sign about your character. Talk to their medical team about what support exists. Caregiver burnout is a recognised condition, and a doctor is the right person to raise it with.
Grieving Someone Who Is Still Here
If the person you care for has dementia, or is declining slowly, you may be grieving them already while still doing their laundry. This has a name, anticipatory grief, and it is not morbid and not premature.
Lord, I am losing them in pieces and I am expected to carry on as though nothing is happening. Let me grieve what has already gone without giving up on what is still here. Give me one good moment with them this week and let me recognise it while it is happening. Amen.
God, they did not know me today. Hold the person they were, and help me keep loving the person in front of me. Amen.
Prayers for the Person You Are Caring For
Lord, be near to them tonight. Ease the pain that the medication does not reach. Give them dignity in the parts of this that strip it away, and let them know they are not a burden, whatever they suspect. Amen.
Father, they are frightened and neither of us is saying so. Give us one honest conversation, and give me the courage not to change the subject. Amen.
There are fuller sets at our prayers for the sick, prayers for cancer and prayers for healing.
When You Cannot Pray at All
Lord, I have nothing to say and no energy to find something. Take this day as the prayer. Amen.
That counts. The work itself is prayer, and the tradition has said so for a very long time. Lifting someone, washing them, sitting with them at three in the morning: that is not time away from prayer, it is what Matthew 25 says God receives directly. On the days you cannot manage words, you are not failing at this.
Bible Verses for Caregivers
Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Matthew 25:40
Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
Galatians 6:9
He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
Isaiah 40:29
Questions About Praying as a Caregiver
What is a good prayer for a caregiver?
A short one for the day in front of you rather than the whole situation. Asking God for what today needs and no more, and for kindness at four in the afternoon when you have nothing left, is more use than a long prayer you will not have time to say.
Is it normal to resent someone you are caring for?
Yes, and it is close to universal. You can love someone completely and still resent what their illness has taken from your life. Both are true at once, and naming it is not disloyalty. If it has become constant, that usually means the load is genuinely too large rather than anything about your character.
What do I pray when I am too exhausted to pray?
“Lord, take this day as the prayer.” The work itself counts. Lifting someone, washing them, sitting with them at three in the morning is what Matthew 25 says God receives directly, so on the days you cannot manage words you are not failing at this.
Is it wrong to accept help or take a break from caregiving?
No. Respite is not abandonment and accepting help is not a failure of love. Caregivers who never hand over do not last, and the person you care for does not benefit from your collapse. When someone offers, say yes and be specific about what would help.
What is anticipatory grief?
Grieving someone while they are still alive, common where there is dementia or a slow decline. It is not morbid and not premature. You can be losing someone in pieces and still doing their laundry, and both things are real at the same time.
What Bible verse is good for caregivers?
Matthew 25:40, “inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me”, because it says the care itself reaches God. Galatians 6:9 on not growing weary in well doing is the other one caregivers return to.
Send a Prayer for the One You Care For
If you would like a prayer for the person you are caring for, or for yourself, carried to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, write it in the form at the top of this page, even if it is only a few tired lines. A priest prays it there in English, it is placed in one of the chapels, and a candle is lit on your behalf. The photographs come to you by email.
