Yes, you can pray for your pet. Scripture says God cares for every creature He made, and Christians have asked His blessing on their animals for centuries, especially through St. Francis of Assisi. Below are prayers for a sick dog or cat, for a pet that is lost, for an animal that is dying or has died, and a blessing for a new pet.
If your animal is ill or injured, take it to a vet first and pray while you go. Prayer and good care belong together.
Short Prayers for Pets
- Lord, thank You for (name). Keep him safe and well today.
- Father, You feed the sparrows. Please take care of my animal.
- Jesus, ease my pet’s pain and guide the hands of the vet.
- God, bring my lost pet home safely.
- Lord, thank You for every year of love my pet has given me.
A Prayer for My Dog
Lord, thank You for (name). He’s always happy to see me, even on my worst days. Keep him safe today: on walks, near the road and around other dogs. Keep him healthy, and help me be a good owner to him. Amen.
A Prayer for My Cat
Lord, thank You for (name). She keeps me company on quiet nights and makes the house feel like home. Keep her safe and healthy, indoors and out. Help me notice when something is wrong, and give her a long, comfortable life with us. Amen.
A Prayer for a Sick Pet
Heavenly Father, Creator of every living thing, I bring my sick pet (name) to You. You know how much this animal means to me. Ease its pain, calm its fear and help it to rest. Give the vet wisdom and skilled hands, and let the treatment work. If it is Your will, restore my pet to health. And whatever happens, give me the strength to care for it well to the end. Amen.
A Prayer for a Sick Dog
Lord, my dog (name) is ill and I cannot explain to him what is happening. He trusts me completely; help me to deserve that trust. Take away his pain, bring down the fever, heal what is wrong inside him, and give him back his strength so that he can run and eat and sleep in peace again. Thank You for his loyalty and his joy. I place him in Your hands. Amen.
Father, bless the doctors caring for my dog today. Let the tests be clear, the medicine work and the operation go well. Keep him calm, and keep me calm for his sake. Amen.
A Prayer for a Sick Cat
Gracious God, my cat (name) is unwell and hiding her pain the way cats do. You see what I cannot. Heal her body, bring back her appetite and her comfort, and help me notice what she needs. Thank You for the quiet company she gives me every day. Amen.
A Prayer Before Pet Surgery
Lord, (name) is having surgery today. He doesn’t understand why he can’t eat or why we’re leaving him here. Please keep him calm. Guide the vet’s hands and keep him safe under the anesthesia. Bring him through it, and help him heal quickly so he can come home. Amen.
A Prayer for an Old Dog or Cat
Father, (name) is getting old. She’s slower now, she sleeps more, and I can see it’s harder for her to get up. Thank You for all these years. Keep her comfortable and free of pain, and help me understand what she needs. When the time comes, help me do what’s kind. Amen.
A Prayer to Find a Lost Pet
Many people pray to St. Anthony of Padua, the saint Catholics ask for help in finding what is lost, as well as to St. Francis. You can pray this while you search and call:
Lord, my pet (name) is missing and I am frightened for it. Wherever it is right now, protect it from cars, from cold and from anyone who would harm it. Lead it back home, or lead a kind person to find it and call me. St. Anthony and St. Francis, pray for us. Amen.
A Prayer for a Pet That Is Dying or Has Died
Loving Father, my companion (name) is near the end. Keep my pet from suffering, and give me the courage to make kind decisions. Thank You for every walk, every greeting at the door and every quiet evening together. Comfort me in this loss, and help me to remember the joy more than the pain. Amen.
A prayer before putting a pet to sleep
Lord, today we’re saying goodbye to (name). I made this decision because I don’t want him to suffer anymore, but it still hurts so much. Let it be peaceful. Let him feel our hands and hear our voices to the end. And please help me stop blaming myself for having to choose. Amen.
A prayer after a pet has died
God, (name) died, and the house is too quiet. I keep looking for her in the usual places. Thank You for the years we had together. Please comfort me, and everyone in this family who loved her. Amen.

The St. Francis Prayer for Animals
St. Francis of Assisi (about 1181 to 1226) called animals his brothers and sisters, and his feast on 4 October is the day many parishes hold a blessing of the animals. Catholics ask for his prayers for pets that are sick or lost.
St. Francis, you loved all of God’s creatures and saw His goodness in each of them. Pray for my pet (name), who is sick and in need of care. Ask the Lord to heal and protect this animal He made, and help me to care for it with the same gentleness you showed to every living thing. Amen.
A Blessing for a New Pet
Lord, bless this new member of our family. Keep it healthy and safe, help it to settle into our home, and teach us to be patient, gentle and responsible with the life You have entrusted to us. Amen.
What the Bible Says About Animals
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.” Luke 12:6 (NIV)
“The righteous care for the needs of their animals.” Proverbs 12:10 (NIV)
“You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.” Psalm 36:6 (NIV)
“In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” Job 12:10 (NIV)
When and How to Pray for a Pet
Pray for your animal by name, and pray about the specific thing it is facing: the diagnosis, the operation, the night it went missing. Many people pray with a hand on their pet. On 4 October, the feast of St. Francis, you can bring your pet to a church blessing if your parish holds one.
Questions People Ask
Is it okay to pray for my pet?
Yes. Jesus says not one sparrow is forgotten by God, and Scripture calls caring for animals a mark of the righteous. Asking God to help a creature He made is a natural prayer.
Who is the patron saint of animals?
St. Francis of Assisi. Catholics also ask St. Anthony of Padua for help finding a lost pet.
Is there a prayer for a sick dog?
Yes, there are two above. Pray for his healing, for the vet, and for calm, and keep following your vet’s advice.
Can I send a prayer for my pet to Jerusalem?
Yes. Write your pet’s name and what you are asking for in the form at the top of this page and we will place it inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Will I see my pet in heaven?
The Bible doesn’t answer this directly. It does say that God has compassion on everything He made (Psalm 145:9) and that all creation will one day be set free from decay (Romans 8:21). Many Christians hope to see their pets again, but the Church does not teach it as certain. What Scripture is clear about is that God sees your grief and cares for you in it.

Send a Prayer for Your Pet to Jerusalem
A sick dog, an old cat, a pet you have just lost: none of it is too small to bring to God. If you would like a prayer for your animal carried to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, write it in the form at the top of this page with their name. We print it, place it in one of the chapels and light a candle for you, and a priest prays it in English. You get the photographs by email. See how it works.
