What a Long Season Does
This is the part worth reading slowly, and it is not offered as a consolation prize.
Long stretches of nothing tend to do two things at once. They wear away at hope, which is the damage. And they form something that comfort does not, which is the part almost nobody mentions because it sounds like an excuse for God.
Both are true and they do not cancel. It is possible to say honestly that a season is costing you something real and that it may also be doing something you would not otherwise get. What is not honest, and what causes a lot of harm, is telling someone in month eighteen that this is all for a reason and they should feel better about it. Nobody experiencing it feels better, and the tidiness is what makes it insulting.
So here is the practical version. Keep asking, because Jesus specifically commended persistence and told a parable about a woman who wore a judge down. Watch for small movement rather than only for the dramatic kind, because most answers arrive at a size you would miss if you were watching for fireworks. Tell one person the truth about where you are. And do not conclude from the delay that you are doing something wrong, because Scripture does not draw that line and neither should you.

I would rather this were over.
Since it is not, do not let it be wasted on me.

Why does God not answer my prayer?
Delay is not the same as refusal, and neither is evidence that you prayed wrongly. Scripture shows people waiting a very long time, and it shows Paul asking three times and being told no. How long should I keep praying about the same thing?
As long as it matters to you. Jesus told a parable specifically about persistence, about a woman who wore down a judge by refusing to stop asking, and the point was that his disciples should always pray and not give up. What is worth avoiding is treating repetition as a mechanism, as if a particular number unlocks something.
